New research is showing that these factors are also protective against age-related vision loss including macular degeneration, a sight-robbing disease that occurs when neurons in the central part of the retina deteriorate. Macular degeneration currently affects more than 1.75 million people in the U.S., and the number is expected to soar to 3 million by 2020 as the population ages.'
