Natural Solutions for Painful Sciatica

Sciatica

'Most of us know someone who has suffered from sciatica, or have suffered it ourselves. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), it occurs most frequently in people between the ages of 30 and 50 years old, causing pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which stretches from the lower back down the back of the leg.

“I’m looking for work,” says one sufferer in an online forum, “have had several job interviews, but when they see how much physical pain I’m in, not even able to sit in the chair without squirming and then having to jump up and walk around, or lay on the floor, obviously, they pass me over.”

“I’m having a flare right now and it’s really affected everything in my life,” says another. “I can’t sit. I can’t stand. I can’t cook. I feel like my life is ruined, though I know it’s not.”'

'Adding to the many benefits of nuts including reducing heart disease, researchers from Harvard Medical School have determined that increasing our intake of nuts decreases our risk of diabetes and pancreatic cancer.

The researchers followed 75,680 women from the Nurses' Health Study – started in 1976 and expanded in 1989. The researchers measured nut consumption among the subjects and updated it every two to four years.

Those who ate at least one ounce of nuts twice a week had a 35% lower incidence of pancreatic cancer and a 32% lower incidence of diabetes.'

Toxic Chelation Compounds Soon To Be Added To Wine To Extend Shelf Life

'According to food scientists, an additive consisting of a series of chelation compounds could soon be applied to wine to prevent it from looking, smelling and tasting funky after oxidation. The problem is, many of them are toxic to living cells.

The researchers stated that chelation compounds that bind with metals to inhibit oxidation, or oxygen’s ability to react with some of the trace metals that are found in the wine, according to Gal Kreitman, a doctoral candidate in food science, Penn State.

“Oxidation has several bad effects on wine, such as discoloration and a loss of aroma,” said Kreitman. “It can cause browning, as well as the loss of fruity characteristics, something that is much more noticeable in white wines.”

How Small Farmers are Saving Olive Oil

Heirloom Olives

'Nestled against the sun-drenched slopes of the Veneto region of northern Italy exists a group of small, organic growers committed to preserving groves of ancient Roman olives.

While olive oil production is changing to meet a new, industrialized era that dismisses heirloom varieties and favors mechanized harvests, these growers whose land hovers between 2 and 6 acres remain committed to the art and tradition of growing ancient varieties of olive – Favarol, Grignano and Nostrano – varieties that might fall to extinction were it not for their passionate commitment and the support of Jovial Foods, a company committed to reviving near-lost, ancient varieties of whole foods and making them available to the public.'

'The first-ever federal health study about sleeping pill usage suggests that sleep is growing ever more elusive for Americans.

According to the latest information, between 50 and 70 million Americans suffer from sleep deprivation, with increasing numbers relying on prescription sleep aids.

The CDC report, based on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005 to 2010), found that nearly nine million Americans take prescription sleeping pills in pursuit of good night’s rest.

Usage differences were found based on age, gender, race and ethnicity. The report listed the following key findings:'

If You're Going To Drink Coffee, Make It Caffeinated

'Many people reasonably opt for decaffeinated coffee due to allergies, increased anxiety, heart rate and nervousness. However, if you are avoiding the caffeine in coffee for reasons unrelated to negative symptoms, you're likely not doing your health any favors. Not only is decaffeinated coffee unnatural and highly processed, but is has also been found to increase blood lipids that raise the risk of heart disease.

Caffeinated coffee contains antioxidants that may offer cardiovascular protection, anti-cancer properties and even prevent diabetes, which is itself a major heart disease risk factor. But it also increases homocysteine levels and may have negative effects on the aorta. In general, when a risk factor has been carefully studied and the results flip back and forth like this, it often means that if there is any harm or benefit, it’s pretty minor.'

Medicine's House of Cards – What Happens When We've Got It All Wrong

'The take-home to this review is to emphasize the fact that conventional medicine often employs consensus opinions arrived at through "expert" discussions. Even if evidence were driving the ship, the evidence itself is compromised by conflicts of interest that have been well exposed. The more you can take your health into your own hands and employ low risk, potentially high yield natural interventions after attending to diet, exercise, and stress management, the less you will get caught in the avalanche of cards when the house falls.'

8 More Reasons I Haven’t Vaccinated My Daughter

http://truedemocracyparty.net/wp-content/uploads/baby1s.jpg

'Last week, my first blog on this very sensitive topic called "8 Reasons I Haven't Vaccinated my Daughter" went viral on MindBodyGreen, being shared almost 50,000 times in the first week. There has been such an outpouring of support from all over the world that has been very humbling. Given the imminent direction vaccination policy in going, it seems like a good time to speak up.

The original article I wrote had 15 reasons, but after editing it was turned into eight. Here are eight more that didn't make the cut, that I thought GreenMedInfo readers might like.'

The Roots of Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Lupus, and Other Autoimmune Illnesses

'You have countless immune cells in every corner of your body that are constantly working to keep you healthy by identifying, packaging, and eliminating harmful substances that have made their way into your blood.

If your immune system falters and begins to identify some of your own tissues as being harmful or unnecessary, it will work to attack and eliminate these tissues through an inflammatory response that can cause pain and discomfort in many forms - this is how autoimmune illness develops.
The specific tissue or groups of tissues (organs) that your immune system decides to attack is determined by your genetics.

But just because you have a genetic predisposition for an autoimmune illness does not mean that you are guaranteed to experience it sometime during your life, or that you cannot recover from it.'

Your Natural First Aid and Herbal Remedy Kit

'Despite our best attempts to live a healthy and toxin free life, there are times when illness or injury strike. In some of these cases (like trauma) conventional medical treatment is certainly warranted and I’m certainly grateful that medical treatment is available if needed.

But what about the times when the illness or injury is not life threatening, but merely uncomfortable or limiting? While our first instinct (especially as parents) may be to get medication to mediate symptoms, there are often natural remedies that don’t interfere with the body’s own immune responses and which can help ease uncomfortable symptoms.

Many of these natural remedies can also be used in the comfort of your own home, rather than having to take yourself or your ill or injured child to a doctor and expose them (and others) to more illness.

The following is a list of what is in my “First Aid Kit” and is a combination of remedies I’ve tested myself, ones suggested by a naturopathic doctor, and ones that I hope to never need! Please note that I am not a doctor and don’t play one on the internet, so this list is for informational purposes only and is not intended to be used as a replacement when medical attention is needed!'

Pushing 80 and given two weeks to live, dying patient cured by cannabis

'Stan and Barb Rutner had already had bouts with cancer earlier in their lives. Barb overcame breast cancer with orthodox treatments and her version of visualization twice. And Stan managed to get through non-Hodgkin lymphoma after six months of treatment. But this time, they were older, and it looked like the end for Stan.

Stan Rutner, a retired dentist and storage facilities owner, was diagnosed with lung cancer which had metastasized into his brain. The diagnosis had surprised him.

He thought he had come down with the flu with his chronic cough. He was in his late 70s, and coping with orthodox cancer treatments was going to be harder than it was before.

Turmeric Superior to Chemical Mouthwash In Improving Oral Health

'Since ancient times, turmeric has been used for remedying oral ailments, among other therapeutic applications too numerous to count.[1] Consider that plants like turmeric were first eaten for thousands of years before our species ever devised the modern day oddity of encapsulated or tableted extracts that could be swallowed without significant oral contact. It is only logical, therefore, that after long stretches of biological time, taking the root orally as either food, spice or medicine, it would agree with and have benefit for that part of our anatomy and its unique physiology.'

Can Coffee and Tea Extend Your Life?

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bmtFpXRmSvk/UoPIkit7tmI/AAAAAAAAA8U/Dbdupln9dQM/s1600/tea.jpg
Photo Credit; The Life Extension Blog

'In a recent issue of the Journal of Nutrition, an article was published showing a lower risk of mortality for coffee and tea drinkers over an 11-year average follow-up period.1

The study included 2,461 participants (over 40 years of age) and formed part of the Northern Manhattan Study. At baseline, the participants were free of stroke, cancer, and heart disease.

Researchers examined the association with food questionnaires during an 11-year follow-up. The majority of participants were coffee and tea drinkers, and the results were impressive.

A 7% reduction in mortality was seen for each additional cup of coffee ingested per day. Strong protection was seen in those who drank 4 or more cups of regular caffeinated coffee. Additionally, a 9% decreased risk of mortality was seen for each increased cup of tea per day.

The proposed beneficial mechanism is the high antioxidant content of these beverages, although the researchers concluded that more research is needed.'

Why You Should Never Eat High Fructose Corn Syrup

 http://vivienveil.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/corn-homer-donut.jpg

'Renaissance physician Paracelsus famously said, “The dose makes the poison,” meaning that even harmless substances can become toxic if you eat enough of them. Many people ask me, “is high fructose syrup really that bad for you?” And my answer to this question is “yes,” mainly for this very reason.

In America today, we are eating huge doses of sugar, especially high fructose corn syrup.  It is sweeter and cheaper than regular sugar and is in every processed food and sugar-sweetened drink. Purging it from your diet is the single best thing you can do for your health!

In recent history, we’ve gone from 20 teaspoons of sugar per person per year to about 150 pounds of sugar per person per year. That’s a half pound a day for every man, woman, and child in America. The average 20-ounce soda contains 15 teaspoons of sugar, all of it high fructose corn syrup. And when you eat sugar in those doses, it becomes a toxin.'

Butter or coconut oil is added to give some slow-to-digest fats to the oatmeal, this keeps everyone full all the way until lunch.

What ever happened to DMSO for cancer and what is it anyway?

 http://www.sott.net/image/image/s3/66486/full/DMSO_book_sm.jpg

'The initial excitement during the 1960s and '70s for a wide variety of uses with natural, inexpensive DMSO was eventually suppressed by the Medical Mafia and followed by obligatory disinformation campaigns.

An Oklahoma natural cancer treatment center, Camelot Cancer Care, used DMSO and had amazingly managed to survive for a while in the USA but was shut down recently by the FDA and FBI.

Natural News reporter Jonathan Benson covered the raid in May of 2013. Here's his report (http://www.naturalnews.com).

A major aspect of Camelot's orthomolecular (mega-dose vitamin) treatment incorporated DMSO, which has been proven to carry compounds deeply and rapidly into tissues while also having its own properties that promote cancer cell apoptosis (cell death).'

Acid-Alkaline: Tips For Balancing Your Diet

'Almost all foods that we eat, after being digested, absorbed, and metabolised, release either an acid or an alkaline base (bicarbonate) into blood. Grains, fish, meat, poultry, shellfish, cheese, milk, and salt all produce acid. The mass consumption of these foods have caused our bodies to become overly acidic, which strips it of minerals.

Over the long haul, those who do not balance their diet with alkaline foods (vegetables and fruits, primarily) become prone to weak bones, joints and muscles, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, and a host of other health problems. In other words, long-term health and longevity have everything to do with acid-alkaline balance.'

Slay the Sugar Monster in Four Doable Steps

 http://plantbaseddietitian.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/Sugar-Addiction.jpg

'A reader recently emailed me asking for help to end her lifelong sugar junkie addiction.

Dear Sarah, I’m sure you get lots of emails every day but I sure hope you can give me some advice. I’m 52 years old and a horrific sugar addict. At six weeks old, my mother started me on chocolate milk and other than very short periods of time, I don’t think I have been without sugar.

It doesn’t matter what form it is in…just have sugar. This morning I told a friend that I could be rolled in chocolate and be happy! So, you see my problem. Please help me get off sugar. Even typing that makes me start shaking and looking for my next fix!!

I’m working very hard to change our eating habits. We grow almost all of our food…veggies, beef, pork, eggs, chicken, milk. This week I started making our butter, yogurt, etc. and hope to be making hard cheeses soon. Can you help a middle-aged, over weight, grandmother improve her health? Thank you so much, Regina'

Top 10 Reasons To Eat Real Sourdough Bread — Even If You’re Gluten Intolerant

'The other day I went to the farmer’s market in Santa Monica and spent some time talking to Jack Bezian of Bezian’s Bakery, the home of Los Angeles Sourdough. I say “spent some time” which makes it sound like twenty minutes or so, but the truth is I must have talked to him for a couple of hours.

The man is a font of fascinating information about health, nutrition, probiotics, gluten intolerance, and fermented foods. He’s been baking traditional sourdough bread since 1966. I’m not talking about the fake stuff you find in grocery stores — this is bread made from a living sourdough starter.

Most modern bread is made with baker’s yeast. Sourdough starter is the traditional way of making bread. It’s how everyone used to make bread before they had commercial baker’s yeast. There are many advantages to eating naturally fermented bread instead of modern bread made with yeast.'
