Medicating the Military

'Spc. Michael Kern has been prescribed a cocktail of drugs as part of his "Warrior in Transition" plan, as he deals with PTSD and other issues since his Iraq deployment.'

'Use of psychiatric drugs has spiked; concerns surface about suicide, other dangers'

'At least one in six service members is on some form of psychiatric drug.

And many troops are taking more than one kind, mixing several pills in daily “cocktails” — for example, an antidepressant with an antipsychotic to prevent nightmares, plus an anti-epileptic to reduce headaches — despite minimal clinical research testing such combinations.

The drugs come with serious side effects: They can impair motor skills, reduce reaction times and generally make a war fighter less effective. Some double the risk for suicide, prompting doctors — and Congress — to question whether these drugs are connected to the rising rate of military suicides.

“It’s really a large-scale experiment. We are experimenting with changing people’s cognition and behavior,” said Dr. Grace Jackson, a former Navy psychiatrist.'

Dem Congressman On Health Bill: Insurance Companies Are 'Holding Hostages'

“There’s a difference between compromise and surrender”

'A Democratic Congressman has stated that he will refuse to vote yes on the pending health care reform bill, declaring that the legislation represents a vastly bloated giveaway to insurance companies and big pharma.

Rep. Stephen Lynch (D-MA) asserts that the Senate bill bankrolls the very companies that president Obama says are taking advantage of the American people.

“We’ve paid the ransom, but at the end of the day the insurance companies are still holding the hostages,’’ Lynch said in an interview with The Boston Globe yesterday.'

Glaxo Funded Backers of 'Danger' Drug

'Sales of Avandia plunged after research in 2007 linked the drug with an increased risk of heart attacks'

'More than nine out of 10 scientists who backed a drug at the centre of a safety scare had financial links to the pharmaceutical industry, a study has found. The disclosure will renew concern about the influence of the multinational companies on patient safety, where a warning about a drug can wipe billions from their balance sheets.

The pharmaceutical industry has become adept at manipulating results and selectively withholding unfavourable data that could expose patients to harm. Now it is accused of skewing the debate over one drug, Avandia, prescribed to millions of people around the world with Type 2 diabetes. Avandia, made by the British multinational GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which helps diabetics control their blood sugar levels, was linked with an increased risk of heart attacks in research published in 2007.'

Low Vitamin D [Three] Levels Linked to Heart Disease

'If your levels of vitamin D[3] are too low, you may be at significantly increased risk for stroke, heart disease and death, a new study suggests.

Researchers followed 27,686 people, aged 50 and older, with no history of cardiovascular disease. The participants were divided into three groups based on their vitamin D levels: normal (more than 30 nanograms per milliliter), low (15 to 30 nanograms per milliliter), or very low (less than 15 nanograms per milliliter).

After one year of follow-up, those with very low levels of vitamin D were 77 percent more likely to die, 45 percent more likely to develop coronary artery disease and 78 percent more likely to have a stroke, and twice as likely to develop heart failure compared to people with normal vitamin D levels, the researchers found.'

Pfizer Hid Evidence That HRT Causes Cancer

'A Philadelphia jury has found drug giant Pfizer Inc. guilty of deliberately ignoring evidence that hormone replacement therapy (HRT) drug Prempro increased women's risk of breast cancer, ordering it to pay unspecified damages to defendant Connie Barton.

Millions of women used Prempro and other HRT drugs up until 2002, when the groundbreaking Women's Health Initiative study found that taking the drugs significantly increased women's risk of breast cancer and death from cardiovascular disease. The risk was so striking that researchers called an early halt to the study out of concern for participants' lives. The drugs were -- and still are -- marketed to relieve the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats.

More recent research suggests that HRT drugs also increase women's risk of dying from lung cancer.'

Body Politic: Call for Civil Disobedience - A Worldwide Strike by the Oppressed

'The blogosphere and meeting places have been alight with anger, outrage, frustration. And questions about how to defeat our tyrannical 'masters' that make our lives a living hell. Gandhi found non-compliance to be an effective tool to defeat his masters. And he was just one man.

Imagine what we could achieve, if we made a concerted effort, for a given number of days.

The fact is, the corporations want our money. The government needs our money. The 'mainstream' media are the mouthpieces of these monsters. And all of them are the cause of our misery. If we starve them of it for a spell, how would that affect them?

We've lost the ability to think for ourselves because we've been programmed not to. If we cease to tune into their propaganda and instead, explore the alternative media, we see a different picture from the one they want us to see. We think for ourselves and join up the dots.'

Are Antibiotics Making Us Fat?

'The common side effects of antibiotics are well documented but a now a new and concerning problem has come to light — weight gain and obesity. Dana Ullman explains in a recent article how antibiotic use causes the loss of ‘good’ bacteria from our digestive tracts (gut) with disastrous consequences for the way we process food. Dana discusses recently published research that found:

* Bacteria within the digestive system are involved in the hormonal regulation of fat and hunger, how food is digested and how fat is stored around the body.

* A link exists between reduced varieties of bacteria in the gut and overweight humans and mice.

* Destruction of gut bacteria by antibiotics may be linked to obesity in the young, type II diabetes, metabolic syndrome, inflammation, and other diseases such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease.

* Farmers have long known that antibiotic use stimulates overgrowth in animals, something they have used to advantage to produce bigger and heavier stock but with fattier and poorer quality meat.

Other findings include:

* Scientists say that microbes essential for human life are now becoming ’extinct’.

* Individuals who carry the H. pylori bacterium have a lower risk of childhood asthma, skin allergies, and allergic rhinitis but this bacterium is now being eradicated through antibiotics.

* Microbiologists and immunologists are concerned that important metabolic pathways dependent on poorly understood microbes may also be lost.

* Exposure to infectious microbes during childhood seems to protect against serious illnesses during adulthood including cardiovascular disease.

* Being ultra-hygienic and overly concerned about germs may lead to inflammatory diseases.

* The incidence of breast cancer is higher in those who use antibiotics.

Dana concludes by discussing research showing homeopathy can be a safe alternative to antibiotic use for both nuisance-value and serious infections. Some of this research is discussed in our own articles on coughs and colds.

Hoxey Cancer Cure: How healing becomes a crime

'This documentary concerns Harry M. Hoxsey, the former coal miner whose family's herbal recipe has brought about claims of a cancer cure. Starting in 1924 with his first clinic, he expanded to 17 states by the mid 1950s, along the way constantly battling organized medicine that labeled him a charlatan. Hoxsey's supporters point out he was the victim of arrests, or "quackdowns" spearheaded by the proponents of established medical practices.

'Interviews of patients satisfied with the results of the controversial treatment are balanced with physicians from the FDA and the AMA. A clinic in Tijuana, Mexico claims an 80% success rate, while opponents are naturally skeptical. What is apparent is that cancer continues to be one of humankind's more dreaded diseases, and that political and economic forces dominate research and development.'

Colloidal Silver Has Mainstream Medicine Singing the Blues

Paul Karason and the "Blue Man" Scam

'The widespread mainstream media coverage of the "blue man" Paul Karason and his rare skin condition known as Argyria is part of a series of largely misleading and sensationalized scare stories about the dangers of colloidal silver turning a person's skin blue.

'Although the Karason story did not appear to originate from mainstream medicine or the FDA, there is little doubt that they have welcomed it with open arms and have been quick to trot out "medical experts" and past FDA warnings to help "sing the blues" about colloidal silver. The truth is that mainstream medicine has a very good reason to cry long and loud about colloidal silver, because it does represent a very real danger – a danger to the huge profits of the pharmaceutical industry's patented antibiotics.'

Magnesium and Cancer

Are You Running On Empty? Many people are running on empty when it comes to their magnesium, iodine and selenium mineral levels. They also run half empty on bicarbonate concentrations (yielding acid and low oxygen conditions), and even are running low on water (partial dehydration) on a regular basis.

by Mark Sircus Ac., OMD

'Researchers from Japan’s National Cancer Center in Tokyo have found that an increased intake of magnesium reduces a man’s risk of colon cancer by over 50 per cent. Men with the highest average intakes of magnesium (at least 327 mg/d) were associated with a 52 per cent lower risk of colon cancer, compared to men who consumed the lowest average intakes. Published in the Journal of Nutrition[1] the research studied 87,117 people with an average age of 57 and followed for about eight years. Dietary intakes were assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Average intakes of magnesium for men and women were 284 and 279 milligrams per day.'

ACCORD Trial Highlights the Failure of Western Medicine

Big Pharma Bullshit Detector

by Byron J. Richards, CCN

'It is time to rethink the subject of health care starting with Big Pharma and medical doctors who drive up costs prescribing useless medication. It is time their education was changed so that they start dealing with the person instead of numbers that drive drug sales. Western medicine has been on a big push in the last decade to give super high doses of drugs for many conditions. The ACCORD Trial is clear proof that the theory is fatally flawed.

The FDA, which has approved fenofibrate drugs for use in situations that do not help people, once again has mud on its face. The FDA trying to cover its Big Pharma-friendly image has cost Americans tens of billions of dollars in fraudulent drug sales. Yes, the FDA will take months to study the data before it figures out how to cover its rear end.'

How To Turn Off The Cancer Switch

'In the world of medical fears, few things rank as high as cancer. For many people, a cancer diagnosis challenges their view of themselves as a “healthy person.” Fortunately, many cancers are curable. You can survive cancer and be healthy.

Cancer Biology 101

A basic understanding of how cancer develops can help you take advantage of what nutrition has to offer. Food can and should be a part of your plan for reducing the risk of cancer, and the risk of getting cancer again if you’ve already had it.

There are three basic steps to cancer development. Obviously, the process is very complicated at the cellular level. But the three-step model explains the most important changes that lead to cancer. These three steps represent some of the best opportunities for preventing cancer from developing at all.'

Hundreds Of Americans File Complaints Over Naked Body Scanners

'A new model of the way the THz waves interact with DNA explains how the damage is done and why evidence has been so hard to gather'

'Despite establishment media spin that naked body scanners are being meekly accepted by a compliant public, documents released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that there have been more than 600 formal complaints about the devices in the last year.

Furthermore, the documents reveal anger at TSA officials for refusing to offer passengers a pat-down alternative, as well as forcing children to go through machines which provide crisp images of genitalia, a particularly outrageous scenario in light of last week’s story concerning a TSA worker who was charged with multiple child sex crimes having raped an underage girl.

“Hundreds of U.S. air travelers have lodged complaints over use of full-body security scanners in the past year, charging they violate personal privacy and may be harmful to their health, documents released on Tuesday showed,” reports Reuters.'

Are You Cannabis Deficient?

by The Medicine Hunter

'If the idea of having a marijuana deficiency sounds laughable to you, a growing body of science points at exactly such a possibility. Scientists have known that the active psychoactive compound in marijuana is THC, which is short for tetrahydrocannabinol.

'In August 1990, researchers reported in the journal Nature the discovery of receptors in the brain that specifically accommodate the cannabinoids in pot. Cannabinoids bind to particular neurological sites in the brain, as though the brain was specifically designed to utilize this plant. Did nature toss cannabinoid receptors into the brain by random chance?

'Are cannabinoid receptors part of an intelligent design for deriving maximum benefit from cannabis? Is cannabis a divine elixir of sacred communion for which we are ideally suited? Actually, a more sober answer seems likely. When there are receptors in the brain for a particular type of compound, that compound is made in the brain. This is true of many important agents that work to transmit brain messages of all types. So a hunt began to find such a compound.

'In that vein, in 1992 researchers in Israel isolated the cannabinoid anandamide in the
human brain. Unlike THC, anandamide is manufactured in the brain, and is therefore an endogenous cannabinoid. This agent, anandamide, is the compound that attaches to the built-in cannabinoid receptors in our brains. The name anandamide is based on the Sanskrit word ananda, which means bliss. Anandamide is a bliss molcule, enhancing greater well being and emotional satisfaction.

'Ever since the pioneering work of Dr. William O’Shaughnessy on cannabis and pain compiled in the 1840’s a growing body of science has shown that cannabis offers relief for various types of pain. In the brain, the endogenous agent anandamide also plays a role in mitigating inflammation and pain. So both cannabinoids from inside and outside the body play a role in pain reduction. More recent studies show
pain relief among sufferers of multiple sclerosis when cannabis is consumed.

'Anandamide also plays a role in proper appetite, feelings of pleasure and well-being, and memory. Interestingly, cannabis also affects these same functions. Cannabis has been used successfully to treat migraine,
fibromyalgia, irritable bowel syndrome and glaucoma. So here is the seventy-four thousand dollar question. Does cannabis simply relieve these diseases to varying degrees, or is cannabis actually a medical replacement in cases of deficient anandamide?

'At least one author, medical doctor Ethan Russo, believes in the possibility of endocanabinoid deficiency, and suggests that such a deficiency might actually be a significant cause of the types of health problems listed above. His paper “Clinical Cannabinoid Deficiency,” published in Neuroendocrinology Letters in 2004, delved deeply into the various ways that cannabinoids function in the body, and how a deficiency in cannabinoids can lead to a broad range of diseases. Since the publication of that paper, a number of studies have further confirmed the effectiveness of cannabis for many health disorders.

The idea of clinical cannabinoid deficiency opens the door to cannabis consumption as an effective medical approach to relief of various types of pain, restoration of appetite in cases in which appetite is compromised, improved visual health in cases of glaucoma, and improved sense of well being among patients suffering from a broad variety of
mood disorders. As state and local laws mutate and change in favor of greater tolerance, perhaps cannabis will find it’s proper place in the home medicine chest.'

How To Drink Green Tea for Beginners

'What Japanese and Chinese people have known for centuries - that green tea is not only a delicacy, when brewed correctly, but also an easy way to augment one's health and well-being - is now being verified and accepted by the medical profession in the Western world. Green tea contains extremely powerful antioxidants, a range of catechins in particular, which protect against health problems such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. It also contains varying amounts of caffeine bound to tannins; the caffeine content depends on where the tea is grown. For some types of tea, the caffeine content is comparable to that of coffee.

'However, even the green teas with the highest caffeine content are much gentler on the body and the adrenals than coffee, the reason being that the caffeine is bound to the tannins in the tea, which ensures a somewhat slower rush of caffeine into the blood.

'The result is a much gentler and more sustained energy boost, compared to coffee and black tea. Also, you won't experience the energy downs you get from coffee, when the rush of caffeine suddenly stops as abruptly as it started. So for those having trouble getting through the day without coffee, which stresses the body's biochemistry, green tea is not merely an alternative, but an improvement. It can do what you want from coffee, but it has none of the negative effects.'

Miso Soup: A Delicious Bowl of Health and Anti-Aging Power

Amazing Miso

Find out why sipping fermented miso soup is the real secret to longevity in Japan. Studies show it can protect against radiation and cancer and keep you looking healthy and young!

by BodyEcology.com

'Miso has been eaten in Japan and China for many centuries and has been attracting the attention of many of us because of its health and anti-aging benefits. It's also quite delicious. When you aren't feeling well a bowl of miso soup can be especially soothing.

While it was once thought that soy was the reason for the low rates of heart disease, breast and prostate cancer in Asia, more evidence is now showing us that it is the consumption of traditional fermented soy products (usually eaten every day) that are providing the real benefits.

Traced from ancient China, where it was known as hisio, a seasoning prized by aristocrats, miso was perfected in Japan from the 7th century to today.

Making miso is an art form in Japan. It is made of soybeans and koji, a culture starter made from beneficial molds, yeast and lactic acid bacteria. As long as you choose unpasteruized miso, you will be getting the benefits of live friendly microflora for the health of your inner ecosystem.

There are many types of miso, some made with just soy beans and soy koji (called Hatcho miso, a favorite in Japan) and others made with barley and rice.

No matter which type you choose, this fermented superfood has many health benefits.'

The Beautiful Truth - Max Gerson's Gift to ALL

Charlotte Gerson speaks out about the cancer industry and natural cancer remedies

by Mike Adams

(NaturalNews) 'Dr. Max Gerson is known around the world as the father of natural cancer cures. Through his innovative and far-ahead-of-his-time natural healing therapies, many tens of thousands of people have cured their own cancers going all the way back to the 1930's. Today, the daughter of Dr. Gerson, Charlotte Gerson, carries the torch for the Gerson Therapy and the Gerson Institute (www.Gerson.org).

'We were recently able to interview Charlotte Gerson, and this 47-minute conversation became one of the most fascinating dialogs I've ever heard about the history of mainstream oppression against cancer cures and leading anti-cancer doctors. This goes all the way back to the Nazis, IG Farben and the history of pharmaceutical companies like Bayer, which were implicated in the chemical torture of concentration camp prisoners.'

Virtual International Memorial to Vaccine Victims

International Memorial to Vaccine Victims Website

International Memorial to Vaccine Victims HERE

'They are the men, women, and children who have died or been injured by vaccines in nations around the world for the past 200 years. This is a virtual Memorial dedicated to those whose lives have been forever changed by vaccines they were often required by law to use. The National Vaccine Information Center, headquartered in the United States, has created this Memorial to honor individual vaccine victims. The Memorial also offers families around the world the opportunity to post stories and photos about what happened to their loved ones so that others can become educated about the signs and symptoms of vaccine reactions in order to prevent vaccine injuries and deaths.

The Witnessing

'If you have come to this website to witness what happened to you or a member of your family, we welcome you. You are part of a large, growing community of people all over the world whose lives have been profoundly affected by adverse responses to vaccination that can cause immune and brain disorders. The vaccine injured community is composed of people, young and old, who are suffering from a spectrum of chronic illness and disabilities, including learning disabilities and developmental delays, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, seizure disorders, mental retardation, diabetes, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and other kinds of neuroimmune and autoimmune dysfunction. Whether your adult son was injured by the DPT vaccine as a child, or your newborn died after getting seven vaccines on one day, or you became disabled after getting an anthrax vaccination as a soldier, or your grandmother was crippled by flu vaccine, this Memorial gives you the opportunity to witness for the world about your experience with vaccination.

Our Hope

'It gives you or a person you care about a voice so that, someday, others will have a choice. Our Hope Our hope is that, by honoring those who are casualties of mass vaccination policies, there will be greater public awareness of the need to value and care as much about those who are harmed by the complications of vaccines as we care about those who are harmed by the complications of infectious diseases. This International Memorial for Vaccine Victims is offered to the world as testimony of the need to protect the biological integrity of life on this planet.'

Rick Simpson's CRUSH CANCER WITH HEMP AND TRUTH

Hemp Oil Dosage Information

'It takes the average person about 90 days to ingest the full 60 gram treatment. I suggest that people start with 3 doses per day about half the size of a grain of dry rice. A dose such as this would equal about ¼ of a drop. After four days at this dosage, increase your doses every four days until you are at the point where you are ingesting about 1 gram in 24 hours, so each dose should equal 1/3 of a gram.

It takes the average person about 5 weeks to get to the point where they can ingest a gram per day. Once they reach this dosage they can continue at this rate until the cancer disappears. A gram is just slightly less than 1ml.

By using this method it allows the body to build up its tolerance slowly, in fact, I have many reports from people who took the oil treatment and never got ‘high’. We all have different tolerances for any medication. Your size and body weight have little to do with your tolerance for hemp oil.

Be aware when commencing treatment with hemp oil that it will lower your blood pressure, so if you are currently taking blood pressure medication, it is very likely that you will no longer need it.'

Democratic Republic or Plutocracy? House may try to pass Senate health-care bill without voting on it

Obama Care is a Trojan Horse Bailout for Big Pharma and the Health Insurance Industry. Who Benefits? Follow the Money...

'After laying the groundwork for a decisive vote this week on the Senate's health-care bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suggested Monday that she might attempt to pass the measure without having members vote on it.

Instead, Pelosi (D-Calif.) would rely on a procedural sleight of hand: The House would vote on a more popular package of fixes to the Senate bill; under the House rule for that vote, passage would signify that lawmakers "deem" the health-care bill to be passed.

The tactic -- known as a "self-executing rule" or a "deem and pass" -- has been commonly used, although never to pass legislation as momentous as the $875 billion health-care bill. It is one of three options that Pelosi said she is considering for a late-week House vote, but she added that she prefers it because it would politically protect lawmakers who are reluctant to publicly support the measure.'

Vitamin D Better Than Vaccines at Preventing Flu, Report Claims

Vitamin D More Effective Than Toxic, Unproven Vaccines Against Flu!

'The risk of children suffering from flu can be halved if they take vitamin D, doctors in Japan have found. The finding has implications for flu epidemics since vitamin D, which is naturally produced by the human body when exposed to direct sunlight, has no significant side effects, costs little and can be several times more effective than anti-viral drugs or vaccine.

Only one in ten children, aged six to 15 years, taking the sunshine vitamin in a clinical trial came down with flu compared with one in five given a dummy tablet. Mitsuyoshi Urashima, the Japanese doctor who led the trial, told The Times that vitamin D was more effective than vaccines in preventing flu.'

'Japanese Knotweed is effective against a variety of organisms including the Lyme co-infection bartonella, leptospira, gonorrhea, and meningitis; its strong antifungal qualities make it especially inhibitive toward Candida albicans. It is also a powerful antiviral agent, effective in the treatment of herpes, ECHO viruses and various strains of influenza such as SARS and Asian flu (which in my opinion, is a far more attractive option than vaccinations of questionable origin).'

'Anyone who is even slightly familiar with Japanese Knotweed knows that it is tenacious and difficult to eradicate. The plants seem rather intelligent, adapting to the various methods of “warfare” thrown at them. Even small pieces of root can repopulate quickly, taking full advantage of suitable circumstances to run rampant.

'Anyone who is even slightly familiar with Lyme disease knows that it is tenacious and extremely difficult to treat. The spirochetes that cause it seem rather intelligent, adapting to the various methods of “warfare” thrown at them. Even small populations can survive for long periods of time in an imperfect environment, just biding their time until conditions improve and will take full advantage of suitable circumstances to run rampant throughout their host.

'Oh dear. There seems to be striking similarities between these two entirely different species. I point this out to illustrate that the qualities inherent in Japanese Knotweed are precisely the factors needed to combat the obstinate and frequently debilitating spirochetes that cause Lyme disease. You could refer to the overall personality of Knotweed as a “doctrine of signatures” of sorts; the survival traits natural to this plant are powerful indicators of the benefits that we may utilize in our quest for health, particularly when confronted with a powerful adversary like Lyme disease.'

The midday nap keeps us sharp - and may even make us smarter

by What Doctors Don't Tell You

A midday nap
can keep us mentally sharp, and may even make us smarter. It seems to wipe clean the 'memory tape' and allows us to cope better with new challenges, a new study among students has discovered.

'Even staying awake throughout the day, as most of us do, can mean we are not so efficient if we need to carry out a new task in the early evening, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have discovered.

They tested the benefits of the midday nap on a group of 39 students, who either had a 90-minute nap in the middle of the day or stayed awake all day. But when both groups were asked to perform a new round of learning exercises at 6pm, the ‘nap group’ dramatically outperformed the 'no-nap' group.

The researchers believe that a nap helps to clear the brain’s short-term memory store and makes room for new information, says lead researcher Matthew Walker.'

Half the US states are insolvent. Nearly all of them are preparing to increase taxes. In Europe too, taxes are going up. Services are going down. And taxpayers are being asked to pay for the banks’ losses…and pay interest on money spent years ago. Until now, they were borrowing money that would have to be repaid sometime in the future. But today is the tomorrow they didn’t worry about yesterday. So, the patsies are in revolt.'

Berries May Reduce Risk Factors For Metabolic Disorders

Berry Healthy!

'A diet rich in berries may reduce levels of inflammatory markers associated with liver health and metabolic syndrome, says a new study from Finland.

Daily consumption of a range of berries, including lingonberry, sea buckthorn, bilberry, and black currant produced a 23 per cent reduction in levels of an enzyme called alanine aminotransferase (ALAT), a well-established marker of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), according to findings published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Fatty liver is reportedly on the rise in the US, with between one quarter and one half of Americans, and the prevalence of NAFLD has increased in line with the ongoing obesity epidemic.

Recent findings have also reported that metabolic syndrome, a condition characterised by central obesity, hypertension, and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism, and linked to increased risks of both type 2 diabetes and CVD, does not develop at all without NAFLD.'

Family-farm advocates call for U.S. to ‘bust up big ag’

Americans Need to Regain Control of Food Production - Down with Government/ Corporate Food Fascism and Up with Community Based Food Democracy.

Say NO to Factory Farms!

Minnesota farmer decries consolidation of seed industry at Iowa Town Hall.

'Fred Dowered, a Minnesota farmer, told the audience that when he began farming 34 years ago his state had 50 seed companies. Now, however, there are only four.

“When there were 50 seed companies, the price of seed corn was held to its own. Now they just let it go rampant,” he said.

That’s a situation that Jim Kalbach, an Adair Couty grain farmer, knows all too well.

“Monsanto soybean seed was $31 a bag last year. Now they jumped it up one third to $41 a bag — in one year,” he said. “That’s highway robbery.”

Many of the men and women in the audience also took exception to the belief that the U.S. food supply boasts the most healthy and inexpensive food in the world.

“The two things we are going to hear over and over on Friday is that we’ve got the cheapest and safest food supply in the world. Both of these statements are damn lies” said Gary Klicker, a southern Iowa producer that can trace his family’s agricultural roots to 1666.

Klicker believes that taxpayers will be out “billions if not trillions” of dollars cleaning up rivers, nourishing soil and dealing with abandoned animal confinement facilities.'

HVP: Biggest Food Recall in U.S. History?

Isn't it Time to Stop Eating Processed Foods?

From Care2

by Melissa Breyer

'We will now attempt to scare you into walking away from the processed food. Why? Well for many reasons, but here is one that is immediately compelling. Thousands of types of processed foods–including many varieties of soups, chips, frozen dinners, hot dogs and salad dressings–may pose a health threat because they contain a flavor enhancer that could be contaminated with salmonella. Manufacturers have voluntarily recalled 56 products, and that number is expected to balloon in the coming weeks into what could be one of the largest food recalls in U.S. history.

The salmonella was found last month in the flavor enhancer, hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP), made by Basic Food Flavors, as well as inside the company’s Nevada manufacturing facility, according to the FDA. The company has an extensive customer list of manufacturers who use the powder or paste to enhance savory flavor–it is similar to monosodium glutamate.

“We don’t know precisely how large this recall will get,” said Jeff Farrar, associate commissioner for food protection at the FDA. “The potential amount of products . . . is very large.”

The contamination is believed to date to September 2009, with millions of pounds of potentially tainted HVP–all of which the company has recalled–shipped in bulk to foodmakers over five months. Many of those companies then sold their products to other clients, complicating the chain and making it hard for federal officials to assess the scale of the problem.

According to the Washington Post, the company at the heart of the problem knew that its plant was contaminated with salmonella but continued to make the flavoring and sell it to foodmakers around the country. Federal officials were alerted to a problem with Basic Food Flavors in early February and sent inspectors to the plant within days of the complaint.

They documented dirty utensils and equipment–mixers and tubing coated with brown residue–and cracks and fractures in the floor, as well as standing water on the floor–all conditions where bacteria can breed. In one area where paste mixers and belt dryers were positioned, FDA inspectors noted “standing, grey/black liquid” in the drain near the area where the hydrolyzed vegetable protein was turned from paste to powder. “We sensed an odor in the vicinity of this drain,” the inspectors wrote. Enough said?

'The FDA has posted on its Web site a searchable list of products being recalled by manufacturers. It can be found HERE.

Micronutrients: Revolution or false hope? Micronutrients show promise for mood disorders

'Micronutrients sound like something out of a Hollywood script: A “cure” for terrible diseases discovered by the families of those suffering with the illnesses, not medical professionals'.

MONTREAL – Tony Stephan’s life was coming unglued.

'In 1994, the 40-year-old engineer from Cardston, Alta., thought his 210-pound teenage son might kill him.

Joseph, 15, had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and although medicated had violent mood swings. Once a gentle giant of a kid, he would explode into violent rages.

“He assaulted my wife. We were all afraid for our lives,” Stephan said in an interview. “My son was insane.”

But that was just the half of it. Severe bipolar disorder runs in the family.

Stephan’s wife, Deborah, and daughter Autumn Stringam, 22, had also been diagnosed with the condition. Autumn hallucinated and saw “demons” coming out of a hole in her chest. Then one day, Deborah committed suicide, asphyxiating herself in the family van in a provincial park.

Stephan was losing it. He had just buried his wife. It seemed to him his son and daughter were next. What he did to apparently save his kids – taking them off their medications and giving them micronutrients (concentrated daily doses of a vitamin and mineral formula) – is now being heralded as either a scam or a revolution.'
